Disclaimer
There are a number of ways you may choose to work with us that are available to purchase or book through our website. The terms and conditions in this document apply to all of our services and products unless alternative terms are explicitly provided to you.
We offer a training course to help you get the skills to improve your finances of your business. This might be your business (as the owner) or your partner’s business (as the paid or unpaid help). Our intention in offering this course is to support you to reduce the time it takes, and build your confidence in using the bookkeeping software Xero, and assist you to set up Profit First systems in the business so that the business can become more profitable.
There are 2 aspects to this course – the first is the online learning component – that is set out in an order to help you get started as if you are first starting out in the business, to help set up rhythms and routines to keep you moving forward. The second aspect is the live calls. While we cannot guarantee that there will be a live call every single week, any known outages will be given with notice. There may be times that Jodi Porteous is unavailable for support and will call upon her team at Northwest Accountancy to fill the gaps, in areas of their specialist knowledge.
Live calls consist of some Q&A times and some Co-working times. If you want the accountability of showing up with someone else to do your bookkeeping work, then use these times to stay on track. If you have questions about what’s going on in your business finances, then they are also a great time to ask questions. Jodi will let you know if she can’t answer a specific question.
Â
Why Work with us?
Jodi Porteous is a CPA and Tax Agent, of 20+ years. She provides her love of training and the ability to explain things simply in an online format that is accessible to everyone. She’s a Certified Profit First Professional since 2019 and a Certified Xero Adviser since 2013.Â
As a Profit First Professional, Jodi Porteous is authorised by the trade mark owners to use and display the following registered trademarks: Profit First Professionals® and Profit First®. These trademarks may only be used and displayed by authorised licensees.
Jodi has been teaching cash management strategies for Businesses since 2017 and has been teaching bookkeeping skills since GST came to Australia in 2000. She’s competent at MYOB, but loves the ease of Xero and that you don’t need to be a bookkeeper to understand it.Â
However, seeing how much effort goes into fixing Xero when something goes wrong, Jodi believes that getting it right the first time is the gold standard. That’s why she designed this course for you.
Â
We believe it is our responsibility to provide a safe place for people when chatting about money and sensitive topics such as when people are struggling with cashflow. By showing up, showing what’s normal and showing examples of how situations can be rectified, answering questions honestly, and giving recommendations suitable for your business where it’s at, you can be sure to feel heard and supported when you show up in any of the live calls.
What we Expect from You
Important information about how to get the most value out of working with us is set out below. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me before proceeding with your purchase.
Important Information
Everything in the online course is generic and will suit most businesses that run in Australia. Note that there are different tax consequences depending on your business type that may not be covered in the pre-recorded videos. As a tax agent, Jodi Porteous may be able to answer general tax questions in the live calls, but may not be able to answer specific questions that require research and you will be directed back to your accountant.Â
This course is designed for those who do their own bookkeeping for their own business (or for the family business). If you are looking for qualifications to undertake a bookkeeping career, this will not give the certificate you need. It is likely to give you skills above what a certificate in bookkeeping may give, as it is based on real examples in the current Xero software.
If your business is struggling from a cashflow hangover (more expenses than income) then you must be willing to put in the work to set up bank accounts and make changes to the spending of the business quickly. This involves having all decision makers on board with you doing the course and implementing changes.
You get out of this course what you put in. You cannot delegate financial responsibilities. If you think that by signing up to this course, you will miraculously just save time and make more money, then this is not for you. The Profit First method works well for most businesses as it provides clarity for cashflow – both current and future. However it is not a set and forget system – it must be monitored and reviewed regularly to remain relevant for your business (we do this as a part of the coursework). We teach you the best practices for managing the bookkeeping and the money management of your business. It’s up to you to implement them.
We cannot deal with every single factor of bookkeeping, taxes and cashflow within the course. There may be circumstances for your business (such as going into liquidation) where this course will not be of benefit. You will be encouraged to get specialist advice if we cannot answer questions in the live calls.
If any concerns arise during our work together, we strongly recommend you seek advice from an appropriately qualified professional.
You will get the most out of working with us if you are willing to learn, adapt to new ways of thinking and have the ability to make changes for the betterment of the business.
You might not be a good fit for this work if you currently don’t do any bookkeeping or manage the finances of any business, as this course is designed to be learned and implemented as you go.
Indemnity
We do not make any guarantees or warranties about the accuracy of any material displayed on this website, or the products, services, or programs offered through it, with the exception of any non-excludable consumer guarantees and other consumer protection provisions set out in the Australian Consumer Law. We are human and errors creep in despite the best of intentions. If you see something that doesn’t seem right, please let us know. As we rely on external software (Xero) to teach, know that they are also undergoing software upgrades, and things that might have been current at the time of recording, may be out of date as a new release is pushed out.
While we make all reasonable efforts to ensure that this website and our course meets with the highest standards of best practice, if something does go wrong that is not a direct result of our negligence, misrepresentation or deliberate fault, you agree that, to the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any loss or damage arising out of or related to our website, any products or services purchased through it, or any material posted on it, irrespective of whether such damages were foreseeable, and regardless of the nature of the claim.
You take full responsibility for your implementation of any suggestions that we may make while providing our services. You understand that our advice is limited to providing you with options for your consideration, and that you are solely responsible for any actions that you choose to take. Always consult your own values and vision, do your own research, and check with appropriately qualified professionals before making major decisions or significant changes. You agree to indemnify us against all consequences arising directly or indirectly from your choices.
You expressly agree that if this indemnity is unenforceable for any reason, our total cumulative liability for all causes of action of any kind (other than negligence or deliberate wrongdoing) shall not exceed the amount that you have paid to us.
Meeting Policies
All weekly meetings are scheduled in advance. The software platform we use likes to send out notifications when the calls are starting. There is the ability for you to add each call to your calendar so that you can pre-plan to attend (we recommend this). Meeting times may change depending on daylight savings and where you are located. The purpose of meetings will be outlined in the Community section of the login, so you can determine if you want to attend or not.Â
Please note that all meetings are open to all members as group calls. We remind you each week of Chatham House Rules – that is – what is said in the room stays in the room. You are not to record the meetings (they are recorded in our software and saved externally so that only members who showed up are able to get access to them). If you want a copy of a meeting recording that you attended, please email [email protected] and request the recording by stating the date of the meeting.Â
If you wish to discuss your circumstances in private, or get specific advice for your business without others hearing it, then booking and paying for a call outside of the Unexpected Bookkeeper program is appropriate. Please send an email to [email protected] and we will forward a booking link.
 Payment Terms
All prices on our website are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of GST.
We use Stripe and Kajabi payments to take your payment. There is an upfront payment and an option to pay over several months. If you require different payment terms, then please email your Name, Business Name and Phone number to [email protected] to discuss payment terms for Unexpected Bookkeeper, where you require an invoice to pay instead of via card.
We do not have access to your account details. Any financial information you enter is stored under Stripe’s security policy: https://stripe.com/docs/security/stripe.Â
Payment is due before accessing the course.Â
Payment plans are offered for your convenience only, so you can spread your payment out over time. You are still committed to paying the whole amount, even if you change your mind about your purchase, as you have had access to our intellectual property. It is your responsibility to ensure you have sufficient funds to make payment instalments on time.
You agree to pay any costs we reasonably incur in chasing overdue payments, including administrative fees, debt recovery fees and legal fees.
Refund Policy
We do not offer a refund if you change your mind, so you are encouraged to consider carefully whether a purchase is right for you before you make your payment. There may be times when we would offer a partial refund – (for example if your business shuts down within 1 month of signing up) please advise via email to [email protected] the circumstances and your request.
This is a lifetime access subscription. You will be eligible to log on at any stage after purchase to review the videos, to attend any of the live calls, and use the platform how it suits you. If you unsubscribe, you still may receive administration emails.
This lifetime access means that the course, platform and live calls will be available to you for the term of the course. There may be circumstances where the course need to be closed down, such as the death or permanent injury of the host – Jodi Porteous. While every effort will be made by Northwest Accountancy Pty Ltd to keep the Unexpected Bookkeeper course open and operating, this cannot be guaranteed.
It is the intention that if this course is no longer relevant to users like yourself, then the course and calls will be available for 12 months after the last person has registered for the course. There will be sufficient notice of 6 months if this is the case.
We rely on the use of software to deliver this course. We cannot guarantee that the software will be operational at all times.Â
If you cannot access the videos or the downloads, we will make every effort to ensure that the access is available to other users, and send you copies outside of the platform if it is. While tech issues arise that we may not be able to resolve as it is at your end, and not under our control, we will do our best that you have the access you need, where it does not inconvenience other members or take considerable amount of time. For example – if you cannot view 1 video we may re-record it and upload it again. If you cannot access all videos, then you may be asked to try another device or the Kajabi app to view the videos instead. We will both take responsibility to try and resolve tech issues that might arise.
We take our obligations under Australian Consumer Law seriously and will do our best to address any issues that arise. However, even if there is a major problem, our liability is strictly limited to:
- replacing the goods or providing the services again; or
- if we are unable to do so within a reasonable time, refunding the full amount that you have paid to me.
If you feel that there is any problem with your purchase, please let us know within 7 days. We are keen to understand what has gone wrong if you are unhappy so that we can address your concerns and try to find a mutually acceptable solution. This can include access to the software, inability to make meeting times (but willingness to attend), missing or incomplete information or what you have purchased is not what you thought it would be.
